Hannah Johansen Schmutz is an artist from Provo, UT and currently lives in Greensboro, NC. Johansen's medium of choice is printmaking, although she is also well versed in painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and graphic design. The pinnacle of Johansen's BFA was her show titled "De-Pondering", displayed in UVU's 6th Floor Gallery. Works of Johansen's have been exhibited in the UVU Student Showcase (2019-21) as well as the Rocky Mountain Student Printmaking Exhibition (2019) where she received an award of excellence. In talking about her body of work, Johansen says:
"I'm interested in existence and the wondrous interaction we all have with life. I often contrast themes of complex human nature and identity with simple geometric shapes and lines. Shapes are fundamental yet sophisticated, making them comparable to many aspects of human nature. As a heavily visual learner myself, shapes, patterns, and lines are the building blocks of all my thoughts. They contain while simultaneously excluding. They're individualistic yet are a part of a single whole. Something as convoluted as human behavior becomes simplified when broken down into clean geometry."
